It is
estimated that 1 in 7 Canadians will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.
It is most important to protect children from the harmful effects of ultraviolet
radiation from the sun.
The Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Dermatology
Association both identify the use of shade as a key strategy to reduce the risk
of developing skin cancer.
Both natural shade from trees and built shade from umbrellas, tents, canopies,
or gazebos are effective to provide protection from ultraviolet radiation from
the sun.
Natural shade from trees is also effective in reducing greenhouse gases, which
is important to help combat climate change, air pollution emissions and
summer heat leading to energy conservation, cost savings and many health
benefits.
