The development and implementation of shade policy is one of the most effective ways to ensure that shade is provided in outdoor public places such as:

  • Schools

  • Child Care Centres

  • Parks and Playgrounds

  • Sporting and Recreational Facilities

  • Outdoor Pools, Beaches, Splash Pads and Wading Pools

  • Streetscapes and Multi-Use Pathways

Municipalities, school boards, child care centres, workplaces and organizations can develop policy to add natural shade, built shade or both to their outdoor spaces. Adding shade not only provides protection from ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but also will impact health and the environment by contributing to clean air, energy conservation and reducing summer heat.
